Book Wizards Volunteer Role Description

As a Book Wizards Volunteer, you will play a vital role in nurturing a love for reading among children from low-income families, while supporting their literacy development and character growth. Your responsibilities include:

  • Curating Activities for Launch/Graduation Events
Contribute to the planning and execution of meaningful and fun activities for the programme’s launch and graduation events. Activities will align with the programme’s values-based approach and focus on experiential learning.

  • Weekly Online Reading Assistance
Support children in developing their reading and phonological skills through weekly online sessions. Volunteers will guide and encourage kids as they engage with age-appropriate, values-based storybooks.

  • Reading Buddy
Be a consistent presence as a reading buddy to a child throughout the programme. You will read together, explore story themes, and help build the child’s confidence and love for reading.

  • Child Check-ins & Rapport Building
Maintain regular, positive communication with your paired child to understand their progress, offer encouragement, and build a warm, trusting relationship that supports their learning journey.

  • Weekly Progress Assessments
Submit short weekly progress updates on your assigned child, noting improvements in reading ability, participation, and values understanding. This helps track their development and ensures timely intervention when needed.

  • Conduct Pre- and Post-Assessments
Support the facilitation of pre-programme and post-programme assessments to help gauge each child’s growth in literacy and values understanding over the course of the programme.

  • Attend Volunteer Training Workshop
Participate in a mandatory training workshop to familiarize yourself with the programme’s goals, values-based approach, and best practices for supporting children in their literacy development.

  • Attend Enrichment Programmes with the Kids
Accompany children to various enrichment programmes designed to solidify their learning experiences. This will allow them to actively apply the values they have learned through the storybooks in real-world settings, promoting hands-on, experiential learning.
